Itlaywithitsheadraisedanditstwofore-pawsoutinfrontofit,likethelionsinTrafalgarSquare.Sheknewatoncethatithadseenher,foritseyeslookedstraightintohersforamomentandthenturnedaway—asifitknewherquitewellanddidn’tthinkmuchofher.
“IfIrunaway,it’llbeaftermeinamoment,”thoughtJill.“AndifIgoon,Ishallrunstraightintoitsmouth.”Anyway,shecouldn’thavemovedifshehadtried,andshecouldn’ttakehereyesoffit.Howlongthislasted,shecouldnotbesure;itseemedlikehours.Andthethirstbecamesobadthatshealmostfeltshewouldnotmindbeingeatenbythelionifonlyshecouldbesureofgettingamouthfulofwaterfirst.

TheLionansweredthisonlybyalookandaverylowgrowl.AndasJillgazedatitsmotionlessbulk,sherealizedthatshemightaswellhaveaskedthewholemountaintomoveasideforherconvenience.
Thedeliciousripplingnoiseofthestreamwasdrivinghernearlyfrantic.
“Willyoupromisenotto—doanythingtome,ifIdocome?”saidJill.
“Imakenopromise,”saidtheLion.
Jillwassothirstynowthat,withoutnoticingit,shehadcomeastepnearer.
“Doyoueatgirls?”shesaid.
